Recently, a noteworthy incident unfolded at OpenAI, a prominent name in the artificial intelligence realm, particularly due to ChatGPT’s prominence. The CEO, Sam Altman, was unexpectedly relieved of his duties. But why? Here are the details…

CEO Sam Altman’s Departure from OpenAI

OpenAI announced through a blog post on its official website just moments ago that the company’s board decided to terminate Sam Altman’s role. Following this unexpected decision in the business world, Sam Altman issued a statement via his official X (Twitter) account.

Sam Altman expressed in his statement, “I’ve immensely enjoyed my time at OpenAI. It’s been a personally transformative experience for me, and I hope I’ve contributed something to the world. Working with such talented individuals has been my greatest pleasure. I’ll have more to say about what the future holds.”

The company attributed the reason for Sam Altman’s departure to inconsistencies in his communication with the board, hindering the board’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities. Reportedly, the Board no longer had confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.

The exact cause of this lack of confidence isn’t fully known. However, according to recent reports, OpenAI is spending $700,000 daily to sustain its ChatGPT service. Predictions were circulating that with such a substantial expense, the company might face bankruptcy by 2024. For those unaware, OpenAI is currently surviving, thanks to Microsoft’s $10 billion funding.

Mira Murati, the company’s Chief Technology Officer, will assume the interim CEO position at OpenAI. While the Board sees Murati as the best choice for this role, they are also not ruling out the search for a new CEO.
